What’s Cookin’ Aiken?

“Nurture Home gave me stability and was a place where I could be still, gather my thoughts, and find out which steps I needed to take in order to be successful. It’s great that I’ve been able to come to this point where I can transition out and know that I will not be homeless again.”

Aiken’s Cookin’ with Celebrity Chefs is a major fundraiser for Mental Health America of Aiken County. Your donation and support help continue programs like Nurture Home, where single mothers like Ada G. overcome their struggles and become self-sufficient. 100% of your donation stays in Aiken County to support these programs that are vital for your neighbors:

>> Nurture Home – gives homeless women an opportunity to develop a plan to move forward with their lives.

>> Welcome Baby – ensures that new moms at Aiken Regional Medical Centers receive information regarding self-care and postpartum depression as well as assistance with practical needs like cribs, car seats, diapers, and formula. This program helps to lower the burden of moms and their babies.

>> Suicide Prevention and Suicide Survivor Support Groups – provide hope in dark times.

>> Operation Santa – provides a Christmas party and gifts for about 200 folks living with mental illness in your community.

>> Don’t Duck – helps children develop good mental health practices.

What is MHA-Aiken’s Impact in our County?

In 2019, MHA-Aiken programs:

>> Supported 63 women through the Nurture Home transition program.

>> Answered about 80 calls per week from individuals seeking mental
health support.

>> Initiated more than 1,000 referrals for everything from shelter and assistance to basic needs.

>> Reached 10,000 people in Aiken County through the MHA-Aiken educational and outreach programs

Offering Hope to Homeless Women

The Nurture Home program offers transitional housing shelter for women and their children. This program helps these women to understand their ability to break the generational cycles of abuse and homelessness by learning to stand up for themselves and take steps toward independence. When they see hope, they begin to change.

Bonnie Fulghum, MHA-Aiken County Executive Director, says that MHA-Aiken is very proud of one of the ladies who came to them with nothing, but with many mental and physical scars. In the year that she was with Nurture Home, she completed the program and gained the confidence to get a job in her field of nursing. The client received several raises at work and was able to work into MHA-Aiken’s independent living cottage, where she stayed for 6 months. While living at Nurture Home, she saved enough money to put her life back together and buy a house of her own. This lady is still thriving in our community and has reunited with her family.

Fulghum states, “Our goal is to provide more space to help more women in our community.” She adds, “Thanks to United Way and to individuals like you, MHA-Aiken will continue to help women and their families in Aiken County.”

LET’S DO SOME MATH PART 2

What does % mean when it pertains to equine nutrition.  It means that you need to know a little bit about math.  We can get into part per million and grams, but that will be another day.  Let’s focus on percentages today.  Throughout the years of feeding horses, feed companies have trained consumers, not with purpose, to buy a specific type of feed based solely on protein percentage, 10%, 12%, 14%, and 16% since the choices were rather limited.  These percentages do not tell you the quality of the proteins, nor does it tell the amino acid breakdown. That being said, many higher quality 10% protein feeds can outperform lower

Should You Eat Healthy While on Vacation?

Many more people will be traveling this summer than last, thanks to the lifting of COVID restrictions. Vacations are times when we want to relax and enjoy ourselves, escaping the routines of daily life.  For some, this escape also means changing the normal eating patterns, especially for those going on a cruise or to an all-inclusive resort. The 5 – 10 pound weight gain during a cruise is, unfortunately, usually a reality.  Even if your vacation is not a cruise, how should you think about eating while on vacation?  Are You an Abstainer or a Moderator? The author Gretchen Rubin has suggested that people are either abstainers or moderators when it

How Do Imbalances in Essential Elements and Heavy Metals Affect Your Health?

When we don’t feel good, we often don’t realize that nutrient deficiencies may be responsible for the decline in the biochemical processes that should keep us functional on a daily basis. We also neglect to make the connection between our declining health and heavy metal toxicity. Our exposure to essential and toxic elements depends on our diet, where we live, and our lifestyle choices. We are exposed to toxic elements through environmental pollution in the air we breathe and through our skin. Our exposure is also impacted by levels in the soil or irrigation water used to grow the foods we eat, the supplements we take, and the water we

Broccoli and Autism | Palmetto Bella

Broccoli and Autism

If we give broccoli to those with autism, it might make things better by relieving some of the mitochondrial dysfunction that creates even more free radicals. Current research suggests four causal factors of autism: synaptic dysfunction, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation. These factors identify the problem but do not identify the cause. Harvard neurologist Martha Herbert said, “I think we need to conduct research as if we know this is an emergency.” Already, up to 1.5% of American children have autism, and the incidence appears to be on the rise. Once it became understood that one cause of autism may reside in the synapses, the nerve-to-nerve junctions where information
