Artist Spotlight | Canaan Peeples Joins Aiken Center for the Arts this Fall

Meet Aiken Center for the Arts’ (ACA) new music instructor, Canaan Peeples. Canaan joins ACA this fall and will be offering individual instruction programs for all skill levels on the guitar, bass, banjo, and mandolin. His experience gives the student the opportunity to choose the genre they want to learn, be it bluegrass, blues, rock, or classical.

Canaan is a classically trained guitarist from Barnwell, South Carolina. He was endowed with an amazing talent for adding color to music with emotion and tone. At 30 years old, Canaan has over 25 years of performing and musical experience. He started playing guitar when he was only 3 years old, and his passion for music has led him to perform many different instruments and styles around the world.

He is a graduate of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities. He studied classical guitar for over 10 years, performing across the southeastern United States, Austria, and the Czech Republic. His master classes and teachers include some of world’s most prolific classical guitar performers: Pepe Romero, Roland Dyens, David Russell, Christopher Berg, and Gerald Klickstein. Canaan is a varied and capable musician in nearly every genre. He has performed on guitar and bass and sung in multiple rock, bluegrass, blues, and soul bands.

Canaan has had TV and radio appearances across the country and performed in multiple national tours. His most recent collaborations have been with The Mobros, PPE&R, and Manley Way, and he is currently writing and recording for his debut solo album.

At Aiken Center for the Arts, we want to provide a place where students can develop skills and knowledge to cultivate an appreciation for music that will enrich their lives. Dynamic music instructors like Canaan provide a positive and interesting introduction to music. We invite you to pick up a guitar, mandolin, banjo, or bass this fall and experience the joy that music can bring to your life. Visit AikenCenterfortheArts.org and find your note.

PHOTO of the MONTH: MARGARET WARREN

And why, you may ask, is this man consigned to drinking his coffee under the breakfast table? He is a college professor, faithful husband, Navy officer, survivor of the sinking of the Block Island during World War II, family man, father of 3, and gentleman farmer. And the latter is how he ended up in the Warren substitute for a doghouse. You see, the Warrens at that time had a barn and a pony but no fenced paddock. Early every morning, my father would lead the pony out of the barn, up the driveway, past the house, and out to the front lawn. There he would tether the pony for

They are offered the opportunity to

Lights of St. Mary’s | Palmetto Bella

Lights of St. Mary’s

On the frosty eve of Bethlehem, hazy nimbus of lamplight on cobblestones leads to the open doors of St. Mary’s. Within, eternal flame of brooding majesty burns above the ornate cupola. Towering pillars, angled arches, patterned concentric circles lofting above the altar — silent hints of the complexity of church history. Lambent stained windows and shadowed mosaic encircle the faithful with biblical messages. Ruby poinsettias amid pine-scented greenery flank altars ablaze with candles shedding their muted pools of empathy and bright sparks of hope this Christmastide. A tree-wrapped manger filled with new straw portends the good works of a parish to welcome the Christ Child! Lusty chorus of ancient carols
