SPRING IN HOPELAND

What is it about the cadence of a swaying swing that soothes a tired mind?

Is it the rhythmic pace that matches a heartbeat?

Or the frayed memories of swishing to and fro, wind upon a face?

Or the push, pump of a child reaching for the sky – such expectation!

In this season of my life, I seek out solitude. No voices.

Just the rapid gurgle of a nearby stream,

The light flutter of leaves in the early Spring,

Their shadows ever-changing on the path beneath my feet.

In this sheltered spot, there is an embedded etching of a horse’s head –

A hint of the ethos of my community.

Ferns and palms dot this oasis, soothing my soul

With gentle touch of a foot on pine-straw.

Birds twitter here and there, lily pads dot the languid pond.

Turtles, frogs and dragonflies glittering in the warm sun.

And I swing.

Eating Healthy on Hilton Head Island

My husband and I have been going to Hilton Head Island on a frequent basis since we got married in 2006. As a popular tourist spot, the island has many different and varied restaurants. We have tried many of them over the years. Because I have a number of food allergies and sensitivities, I have learned where to get healthy food that can accommodate my needs. I encourage Bella readers to try any of these the next time they take a trip to Hilton Head. Cooler’s Grocery Store My first recommendation is actually not on Hilton Head. Cooler’s Store and Exxon station is on Highway 462 near Ridgeland. We stop

Paradise In The Pandemic

People flock to beaches for sanctuary, but are met with crowds and exposure to more than the sun. Myrtle Beach, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, Edisto, Hilton Head — all are summer attractions for tourists from around the world. There are large homes available for rent right on the beaches of South Carolina; some can sleep up to twenty people, providing a great destination for family reunions and house parties. The local economy depends on these tourists, but the hometown people have been flabbergasted by the recent results. Recently, cases of COVID-19 have spiked to record highs. The more private beaches of Pawley’s Island, Kiawah, and Seabrook have

First Friday Art Walks | Charleston Galleries are Therapeutic

In the French Quarter of Historic Charleston, there are dozens of independent art galleries. Photographic oil paintings of the low country marsh are popular, and one can find plenty of impressionistic style acrylic pieces of the historic buildings. The galleries showcase artists of extraordinary talent and skill, and Charleston knows how to spotlight this by supporting a First Friday Art Walk. In 1995, there were 25 galleries that participated in this venture; 25 years later the walk has extended to King Street and beyond with 40 galleries that open to the public. At 5:00 pm, as other shops start to close for the evening, art lovers, tourists, and college students

Our Experience: Greenville | Aiken Bella Magazine

Our Experience: Greenville

Until recently, for one of those inexplicable reasons, Greenville was one of those places I always wanted to go but never did. As ridiculous as it sounds, perhaps it was because it seemed WAY up north to me. For the record, it is just over two hours from Aiken. Side note: one of the great things about our state is that even traveling from Charleston (another fantastic city of ours) to Greenville only takes about three hours. I am very disappointed I waited as long as I did. On my first visit, I instantly fell in love with the great city, and it was everything I was told it was.
